20 Kitchen Features You Don’t Need (But Are Nice to Have)

Designing a kitchen is a balancing act between practical needs and aspirational upgrades. Every homeowner has a budget, and while there are foundational elements every kitchen should include—quality cabinetry, good lighting, durable surfaces—there are also features that fall squarely into the “luxury but not essential” category.

These upgrades aren’t necessary for a beautiful or functional kitchen, but they can elevate the experience of using the space. If the budget allows, they can add convenience, comfort, or just a little bit of fun.

Here are 20 kitchen features you don’t technically need—but many homeowners love once they have them.

1. A Second Kitchen Island

One island is already a luxury in many homes. Two islands take the layout to another level.

Designers often use one island for food prep and cooking support, while the second functions more like a dining table or entertaining hub. It’s beautiful and incredibly functional for large families or frequent entertainers—but definitely not a necessity.

2. A Pot Filler

Mounted above the cooktop, a pot filler allows you to fill large pots without carrying them from the sink.

It’s convenient, but keep in mind:
You still have to carry the pot back to the sink to drain it. For many homeowners it’s a “nice but not essential” upgrade.

3. Appliance Garages

Appliance garages hide small countertop appliances behind retractable or lift-up cabinet doors.

They keep counters looking clean and uncluttered, but they require additional cabinetry space and hardware.

4. Built-In Coffee Stations

Coffee stations have become extremely popular in kitchen design.

These dedicated areas might include:

  • Built-in espresso machines
  • Mug storage
  • Small sinks
  • Specialized lighting

While convenient for coffee lovers, they’re certainly a luxury.

5. A Drawer Microwave

Drawer-style microwaves installed in base cabinetry are sleek and ergonomic.

They eliminate the need for an upper cabinet microwave, creating a cleaner visual line across the kitchen. They look fantastic—but a traditional microwave works just fine.

6. A Walk-In Pantry

Large walk-in pantries are highly desirable in new homes.

However, a well-designed kitchen with tall pantry cabinets and smart storage accessories can accomplish nearly the same level of organization in far less space.

7. A Butler’s Pantry

A butler’s pantry acts as a transition space between the kitchen and dining room.

It’s ideal for entertaining and can house:

  • Additional sinks
  • Beverage refrigerators
  • Dish storage
  • Prep areas

Amazing if you host frequently, but not necessary for everyday living.

8. Warming Drawers

Warming drawers keep food hot until everything is ready to  serve. They’re particularly popular for holiday cooking and large gatherings. For most day-to-day meals, though, they rarely get used.

9. Cabinet Interior Lighting

Lighting inside cabinets looks incredible when displaying glassware or decorative dishes.

It adds ambiance and elegance, but it’s definitely a design upgrade rather than a functional necessity.

10. Under-Cabinet Lighting with Smart Controls

Standard under-cabinet lighting is useful.

But advanced systems with dimming, color temperature adjustment, and smart home integration are where the luxury begins. Beautiful and impressive—but standard lighting still gets the job done.

11. Toe-Kick Drawers

The space beneath cabinets is usually unused. Toe-kick drawers turn that hidden area into shallow storage. They’re clever and surprisingly practical—but they’re far from essential.

12. Pull-Out Trash Cabinets

A pull-out trash cabinet hides waste bins behind cabinetry. While it’s a popular upgrade and improves the look of the kitchen, a freestanding trash can technically works just as well.

13. Panel-Ready Appliances

Panel-ready appliances allow refrigerators and dishwashers to blend seamlessly with cabinetry.

The kitchen looks beautifully integrated—but these appliances typically cost significantly more.

14. Built-In Wine Storage

From small wine refrigerators to full wine walls, wine storage has become a common kitchen feature.

Great for collectors and entertainers—but not something every kitchen needs.

15. Custom Range Hoods

A dramatic range hood can become the focal point of a kitchen.

Stone, plaster, wood, and metal hoods are popular design elements. They’re stunning—but a standard hood performs the same ventilation job.

16. Glass Cabinet Doors

Glass-front cabinets break up long runs of cabinetry and create visual interest.

They’re beautiful for displaying dishes or decor, but they also require keeping everything inside tidy.

17. Built-In Cutting Boards

Some kitchens incorporate slide-out or integrated cutting boards into the cabinetry.

It’s convenient during food prep, but a standard cutting board in a drawer works just as well.

18. Charging Drawers

Hidden charging stations inside drawers keep devices organized and off the counters.

They’re great for busy families managing phones and tablets—but they’re more convenience than necessity.

19. Beverage Centers

Beverage centers often include a small refrigerator, sink, and storage for glasses.

They’re perfect for entertaining or keeping kids out of the main refrigerator—but they do add additional cost and space requirements.

20. Specialty Storage Accessories

Modern cabinetry offers incredible storage solutions, such as:

  • Spice pull-outs
  • Vertical tray dividers
  • Mixer lifts
  • Corner swing-out shelves

They can make kitchens incredibly efficient, but a well-organized cabinet can still function perfectly without them.

The Real Secret to a Great Kitchen

Luxury features can make a kitchen feel special, but the most important elements of a successful design are much simpler:

  • Smart layout
  • Quality cabinetry construction
  • Durable finishes
  • Good lighting
  • Thoughtful storage planning

When those fundamentals are right, a kitchen will function beautifully for years.

Everything else is simply the cherry on top.
